A genuine French barrette mechanism may look very similar to most barrette mechanisms, but unless the Hallmark is stamped "MADE IN FRANCE", the mechanism is probably a cheap imitation. Typically, cheaper barrettes announce 'French style barrettes', but keep in mind, that 'French style' is not 'Genuine French'. This essential part of the barrette either makes or breaks the barrette quality. Cheaper mechanisms have a tendency to slip, fall apart, or simply break. Often the releases malfunction or stick. This is due to the weak material, and loose construction of the mechanism itself. French barrettes are made of thicker higher quality material, and the mechanisms are designed to last.
